CENTRAL VIRGINIA - Virginia State Police aren't saying how big the problem is, but they're prepared to do all they can to discourage drivers from putting themselves in danger.

We're talking about drivers frustrated that some area rest stops are closed, so they pull over on the side of the interstate to rest, stretch or use the restroom.

"We know this is the first major holiday since V-DOT shut down some rest stops. People who pull over on the interstate should know they're breaking the law," said Sergeant Thomas Molnar, Virginia State Police.

Liz Bricking works at the Oilville Exxon, just down the road from a closed rest stop on I-64. She told CBS 6 she's seen drivers stopped on the side of the interstate in the mornings, a few times.

"It's so dangerous. If you're on the interstate like that you - just don't know if you're going to end up upside down or pushed into a tree."

Bricking says she'd rather see drivers try to make it to their store parking lot and try to sleep with the doors locked instead of becoming "another fatality - another statistic."

Sergeant Molnar says this Labor Day weekend 75% of the trooper's workforce will be patrolling the roads, ticketing speeders, drunk drivers, seat belt violators and those improperly stopped on the interstate.

"If we catch them, they will get a summons," said Molnar.
