MIDLOTHIAN -
A robust lineup of businesses looking to hire- 86 firms in total- drew people from all over the city on Monday.
"I'm hearing people who want to get back to work," exclaimed Congressman Eric Cantor, R-7th, who organized the job fair at Clover Hill High School.
"I'm hearing a lot of folks who have been laid off- there are some who've [lost their job] because of Circuit City- literally thousands of people in our area who have lost their jobs."
You can count Kate Moore in that group. The program manager by trade, formerly at retailer Circuit City, relished the opportunity to mix and mingle with such a large group of employers.
"It seemed to [bring out] some high-quality teams here," said Moore. "There are a couple that I really want to get some face-to-face time with."
The industries represented varied across sectors, from utility company Dominion Power, to government agencies like the C.I.A. and financial powerhouse Capital One.
According to Cantor, a resurgence in the Richmond region will have to include a pickup in the traditionally vibrant financial sector.
"We need to be focusing on the industries that our strong in our area," explained Cantor. "Obviously we've been strong in the financial services, and that has taken a hit lately."
Total attendance on the day surpassed 3,000 people.
Employers accepted resumes and applications, but held off on any hiring at the fair.
