I-64 WEST AT HRBT REMAINS CLOSED
Additional Congestion on I-664 North
NORFOLK The westbound tube of the I-64 Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) remains closed due to a malfunctioning water main system.
Congestion is building on I-664 North from Bowers Hill to the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel (MMMBT). Traffic is now backed-up approximately 11 miles.
Motorists should also anticipate alternating lane closures at the Route 17 James River Bridge in both directions for the electric company to make repairs to live electrical lines. Crews hope to complete repairs before rush hour. Traffic remains heavy, but steady throughout the area.

The westbound tube of the I-64 Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel remains closed due to a malfunctioning water main system.
Congestion on I-64 East through Bowers Hill has cleared. I-664 North traffic is moving heavy, but steady.
A water main break is believed to be the cause of ponding in the westbound tube. The tunnel is not leaking. The water main system has been shut off to stop additional water from entering the tunnel. Crews are currently using vacuum trucks to pump out the water. After that, they will need access to the tunnel travel lanes to make system repairs. We anticipate this work being completed before evening rush hour.
Crews believe the water main pump malfunction may have been caused by the severe storm last night and resulting power outage. Approximately four inches of standing of water had seeped onto the roadway from one of the pump houses.
A detour is in place diverting I-64 West traffic around to I-64 East. Motorists will be detoured off of I-64 West at 4th View. To get to the peninsula, motorists can then follow I-64 East to the I-264 interchange. Take I-264 West to the Downtown Tunnel and merge onto I-664 North toward the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel (MMMBT). Motorists can then continue toward the MMMBT or detour off of I-664 North onto Route 17 North and use the James River Bridge.
