Another Rabies Case Confirmed in Henrico
HENRICO - Another case of rabies has been uncovered in Henrico County.

A dead racoon was found in the 10000 block of Newlands Avenue on Tuesday. It did not come into contact with anyone.

This is the second rabid racoon discovered in Henrico in the past week. Another dead racoon was found in the 200 block of Antioch Avenue on Friday. That's in Sandston.

Below is a press release from Henrico Police on this latest rabies case:

On August 25, 2009 the Henrico Police Animal Protection Unit received a call for a possible wildlife exposure in the 10000 block of Newlands Avenue. When officers responded the owners advised that they had found a dead raccoon in the yard with their two dogs.

The raccoon was submitted for testing and positive results were received on August 26, 2009. The two dogs involved did not have valid rabies vaccinations. The information will be forwarded to the Henrico Health Department for quarantine recommendations. There were no other reported exposures.

This is another example of why it is imperative that pet owners have their animals vaccinated for Rabies. Remember, it is required by law.
