Henrico Rabid Cat
HENRICO COUNTY -
Henrico Police are warning anyone who came into contact with a violent cat Wednesday near the area of Hungary Road between Staples Mill and Woodman Roads that the cat was rabid.
Police say on Wednesday, September 2 they received a call for a cat chasing someone in the 9700 block of Laurel Pine Drive near Laurel Recreational Park.
Jenee Gilchrist, a Virginia Union University Seminary student was leaving her home in when she noticed the cat outside.
Gilchrist says as she was getting into her car the cat, which was acting strangely, lunged at her and crawled up her leg scratching her in the process.
She says she fell backwards causing the cat to lose its grip.
That's when she made a run for her front door with the cat chasing her the whole way.
She managed to make it inside and slam the door preventing the cat from coming in.
Police say the cat also attacked two neighborhood dogs.
Police soon caught the cat. It was euthanized and has since tested positive for rabies.
Henrico Police Animal Protection and the Henrico Health Department are requesting anyone who believes they may have been exposed to the gray cat prior to the afternoon of Wednesday, September 2, 2009, contact Henrico Police Non-Emergency Communications at 501-5000 to report that exposure.
The attacking cat was gray with subtle darker gray tabby markings with white on its chin and around its eyes. It had a medium length coat and weighed approximately eight pounds.
