ORIGINAL REPORT
State police are on the scene of an early morning multi-vehicle crash involving a state trooper.
The crash has shut down I-64 East at mile marker 173 in Goochland County. Traffic is being detoured at Exit 167 (Oilville).
State police tell CBS 6 the crash happened shortly after midnight. A trooper with its emergency lights flashing pulled over a Saturn on the right side of the road.
A Chyrsler, traveling in the same direction, moved over into one of the left lanes to get away from the right shoulder. An oncoming Impala did not and slammed into the back of the trooper's car, which then hit the Saturn. The Impala skid into the left lane and hit the Chrsyler.
The trooper was taken by helicopter to VCU Medical Center and is expected to be okay.
Police tell us if the driver of the Impala had been following the rules of the "Move Over" law, this crash could have been prevented. The "Move Over" law states that drivers must yield right-of-way or reduce speed when approaching stationary emergency vehicles on highways.
No charges have been filed in this crash as of yet.
