RICHMOND -
At a news conference at the Diamond Wednesday morning, The Richmond Metropolitan Authority and the Eastern League announced that the Connecticut Defenders will be the new team replacing the Braves in Richmond.
The Defenders are a AA franchise of the San Francisco Giants. The team has agreed to play at the Diamond for two years with three one-year contracts with a possibility of continuing to play there for up to five years.
Team owner and promoter, Lou Dibella was one of several who stepped up to the podium saying, "I want to thank the people of Richmond. The baseball fans of Richmond - 'cause they made this happen."
"We've established a management team that we think is already going to be the gold standard of minor league baseball," Dibella said. "We are not here as visitors, we're here as new members of the Richmond community."
In addition to baseball, team representatives said fans can expect to see $1.5 million in improvements to the Diamond. The improvements include: 3,200 new seats, windows in the press box, video in the score board and a very clean facility.
Right now the team does not have a name and is asking Richmond baseball fans to help with that. A contest is underway and will be conducted in two rounds. Fans can submit names online by visiting the Richmond Times-Dispatch from September 23 to September 30. Five names will be chosen for the second round that runs from October 5 to October 12. The final name will then be announced October 15.
Team leaders said more information on the team will be made available at richmondprobaseball.com
