    • Mark: you would be the first one complaining if the event went on and Carytown got trashed due to no police/security-. So which side are you on? 50K over three years...thats cheap. If you want to have a party, you have to pay for it. Quit whining people! Nothing is for free!

RICHMOND - UPDATE @ 6:45 a.m. Tuesday July 7

The Richmond SPCA has set up a memorial fund in honor of "black dog", a well known stray who roamed the streets of a West End neighborhood.

The SPCA says they set up the fund after several requests from the public. Money from the Black Dog Memorial Fund will be used to spay or neuter strays brought into their facility.

A dog run will also be dedicated in memory of black dog at the Robins-Starr humane center.

====== UPDATE @ 7:00 a.m. Friday

Very seldom does a dog live through 2 decades, but people who live in part of Richmond's near west end say that's at least how long the famous "black dog" roamed their streets and neighborhoods. They called him "the king of the strays".

The beloved chow-mix had many homes, where people often left food out for him. He has alluded years of traps, tranquilizers, and nets from animal control officers.

Many believed he wasn't just a dog, but a spiritual figure, seemingly immune to time and age. On Thursday they learned, sadly, that he was mortal. He was apparently hit by a car early in the morning.

He was buried that afternoon on the property of a secluded estate in Buckingham. Among those present at the impromptu burial, a woman he once saved from a late night attacker.

As CBS 6's Mark Holmberg reports, it's important to remember how much black dog reminds us it's okay to be independent, to be free, to be scruffy, and to be hungry every once and a while.

====== UPDATE @ 2:55 p.m. Thursday

Black is now lying in state in Richmond's Windsor Farms neighborhood. A "rural" burial is planned later today.

====== A legendary Richmond resident has died.

We've learned that Black Dog - was found dead Thursday morning near the intersection of Cary and Maxwell this morning. The person who found him believes he was hit by a car - and killed.

Black Dog built a reputation that was larger than life, evading the dogcatcher for years, even having a sixth sense about when he was in danger.
