Richmond Baseball Names
RICHMOND -
We are exactly six months away from the home opener at the Diamond and excitement is building about Richmond's newest sports team. Folks are eager to hear what the new baseball team will be named.
Richmond Pro Baseball reps say they're hyped up about all the buzz from a recent baseball naming contest. Roughly fifteen thousand entries poured in and the group managed to whittle that list down to five finalists. The names being considered are the Rhinos, Rock Hoppers, Flatheads, Flying Squirrels and the Hushpuppies.
John Laaser tells CBS 6, "The contest did exactly what we hoped for. You're kind of blown away with how many people wanted to be a part of it. We had high hopes and the people of Richmond trumped us and responded better than our wildest dreams."
Laaser says those who came up with the final five names will be on hand for a special announcement and celebration today. The winner of the contest will walk away with two season tickets. The four other finalists will also receive prizes for their participation. "We've got some tricks up our sleeves. We're big on pomp and circumstance and so we like to turn it into a show, so, yeah they'll definitely be there and it'll be worth their time to be there" Laaser says.
Stay tuned to CBS 6 and wtvr.com for the latest on the new name. The announcement is set for 2:30pm. We will have a crew at the event and will bring you the information as soon as it becomes available.
