RICHMOND - August first was the day the Eastern League says it had to know if Richmond would have a baseball team.

Nearly, two weeks after the deadline CBS 6 is investigating the status of a new team.

We're learning little information is coming out because the Eastern League office is reportedly threatening a $50,000 fine if anyone in their organization talks about the move before it's officially announced.

But it must be approved first by both Major and Minor League baseball before it's a done deal.

City leaders say Richmond will have baseball in 2010, most likely at the Diamond.

But when CBS 6 tried to get more details, city leaders say it's up to the Eastern League to provide that answer.

"We hope to have a team here for the 2010 season," says RMA President Mike Berry.

"We have every assurance that we're on track to have baseball in Richmond," says city spokesman Mike Wallace.

But CBS 6 is still waiting to find out if it will really happen. So far, nothing yet.

"We are waiting on the Eastern League to complete their internal reviews. Once we have that review, we'll be able to move forward from there," says Mike Wallace.

So, where to things stand with the Eastern League? CBS 6 tried to get answers after repeated phone calls, here's what the office of the Eastern League President told our reporter Sandra Jones: "I actually gave him the message but I don't think he's had any chance to make any calls. He was only here briefly this morning before being delayed for a little bit."

In a third phone call, this same Eastern League representative tells CBS 6, there's nothing to report about a team coming to Richmond.

The Connecticut Defenders are widely believed to be the team that could call Richmond home next year.

And while it's not 100-percent certain whether that team will play ball in the River City, improvements are underway to make the Diamond shine.

"Obviously, time is getting short for a team to come here and make all the necessary improvements that must be in place in order to accommodate a professional baseball here for 2010," says Berry.
