Update 4:30pm

Virginia State Police say that a motorist came on the right shoulder of I-95 South striking a disabled vehicle a tow truck was attempting to pick up. The vehicle then went onto the highway striking another two vehicles. The accident has left a 12 mile back up late this afternoon as VDOT crews try to repair the concrete barrier.

CBS 6 has just received an update from VDOT spokesperson Dawn Eischen -

She says the accident involved a tractor trailer at Route 288 & I 95 South at Mile Marker 62.

This caused I-95 to be completely shut down. Traffic was re-routed off of Willis Road to Exit 64 and entering back on I-95 South at Route 10 which is Exit 61.

There was damage to the concrete median. VDOT and emergency officials cleaning up. Right north bound lanes remain closed. If anyone is coming North of Richmond take 295 south especially coming through Chesterfield and the Tri-Cities. Use Rte1 or 295 as alternative.

Original Avoid I-95 South between Willis Road and Route 288. State Police are on the scene of a multi-vehicle crash. We believe several cars and possibly two tractor trailers are involved.

According to 511, all south bound lanes are closed and one north bound lane is closed. State Police say right now, injuries appear to be minor.

If you can avoid the Interstate, stay out of this area completely, as emergency crews will be stopping traffic to help the injured and clear the wreckage.
