HANOVER COUNTY -
Update 7/13/09:
The brother of an 18 year old girl severely burned at the Hanover Tomato Festival on Saturday says the family is shaken up.
"We're trying to hold it together and be strong together," says Mike Greenstreet.
Shannon Greenstreet was volunteering at the busy funnel cake booth, when she somehow lost her footing and tripped into a vat of scalding oil. The vat tipped over, spilling oil on Greenstreet from the waste down, causing her to suffer second and third degree burns over 30 percent of her body.
"It melted her skin, her arms and her legs. She's going to have to have skin grafts soon," says Mike Greenstreet .
Greenstreet's boyfriend, best friend, and another volunteer also suffered severe burns while trying to help her.
Two victims, including Greenstreet, were medflighted to VCU Medical Center. The two other victims were taken by ambulance. They suffered burns on their extremities.
OSHA is investigating the accident, but Hanover Fire and EMS says it appears it was a tragic accident.
"It was unavoidable, is the way we see it," says Chief Willie Jones.
Jones say the victims were fortunate because medical helicopters were at the festival that day for demonstrations.
