Most of Wednesday will be sunny and dry, but an upper-level disturbance will pass over our area this evening and overnight, bringing a good chance for scattered showers to central Virginia. Some of these showers could have heavy rainfall with them after dark, in addition to some thunderstorms capable of strong wind gusts. With good southwest flow into Virginia over the next few days, our warming trend will carry us through the end of the work-week. Highs Thursday and Friday will be around 70 degrees. However, a strong surface cold front will sweep through the Commonwealth the first half of Friday, bringing a chance for showers and thunderstorms, a few of which could be severe with damaging straight-line winds. Cooler, seasonable air will surge back into the Mid-Atlantic behind this front, leading to a seasonably cooler, dry weekend.
The extended pattern continues to suggest the potential for a little wintry weather next Wednesday and Thursday, February 29th into March 1st. The current indications would be something similar to what we just experienced on Sunday, with a southern stream low developing and moving into the area as colder air settles into the region from the northwest. A lot will change with this setup over the next several days, so stay tuned on air and connected online for the very latest.
