Hurricane Earl has weakened today, but as of the 5 PM advisory, is still a major category 3 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 115 mph and gusts to 140 mph. The forecast track of Earl should take the eye of the storm about 45 miles east of Hatteras on the Outer Banks of North Carolina in the pre-dawn hours Friday. Virginia Beach and much of the Tidewater will likely receive sustained winds in the range of 50 to 80 mph as Earl passes by. Hurricane Warnings remain in effect from Cape Fear NC north to the Virginia border. Tropical Storm Warnings are in effect for the coastal and Tidewater areas of Virginia. Coastal flooding will be possible on the western shore of the Chesapeake, as well as along the banks of the tidal rivers. Tropical Storm Fiona is packing winds of 50 mph, and should turn northeastward tomorrow and not affect the U.S. coastline. Tropical Depression Gaston has winds of only 25 mph, but will need to be monitored for possible strengthening next week. A cold front will move through the state late Friday, ushering in much milder weather for the Labor Day holiday weekend. An isolated shower will be possible Friday night as the front moves through, but most areas will remain dry. Stay with CBS 6, We'll Keep You Ahead of the Storm.
