RICHMOND -
As we first reported to you on Tuesday, the Virginia Tech Hokies will face Boise State during the 2010 season at Fed Ex field.
Sources had originally told us the game would be the season opener for both teams, but today Boise State officials confirmed the game will be played on October 2nd.
Originally, they had planned a home and home series in 2010 and 2011 against former Big East rival Syracuse. But when the Orange asked out of the deal, Tech was left with holes in both schedules.
The Broncos and Hokies have been two of the nation's most successful collegiate teams the past 10 years (1999-2008). Boise State has the best record in college football during that time at 108-20 for an 84.3 winning percentage. Virginia Tech is 100-30 (.7692%) the past 10 years which is the sixth best mark in the Football Bowl Subdivision.
"We are very excited about facing the caliber of a team like Virginia Tech," Boise State Head Football Coach Chris Petersen commented. "They have an outstanding program and will be a tough opponent. Hopefully are fans will travel across the country to see the Broncos play."
Virginia Tech will be the home team with the television rights belonging to the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).
Boise State will receive a guarantee of $1.25 million for playing in the game.
The 2011 opening will most likely be against a different team and take place at Lane Stadium in Blacksburg. There are no current plans for the Hokies to travel to Boise State for a return game anytime in the near future.
