RICHMOND -
Police and dive crews spend a second day out on the James River, near Rocketts Landing, searching for missing VCU exchange-student Jonny Dorey. Dorey has been missing since March 2.
Wednesday police found Dorey's belongings near the Shoreline area. Thursday they returned with dive boats and focused on the waterway as well. However, Thursday's search turned up no new leads. Crews wrapped up their search around 3 p.m. There's no word yet on when they plan to continue searching.
This is an update to the story posted below:
VCU spokesperson, Mike Porter, confirms to CBS 6 that items found Wednesday afternoon do belong to missing VCU exchange student, Jonny Dorey.
Porter says a citizen alerted police to the Rocketts Landing/Shoreline area after discovering the items. They do not believe the citizen has any connection to the case and will only say that they positively identified items found to Dorey.
Although there have been several published reports that a backpack was among those items, Porter would not specifically say whether that was true.
There are currently 20 investigators from both Richmond and VCU police departments on the scene, including VCU Police Chief John Venuti. There are also several rescue boats, dive teams and firefighters out on the James River broadening the original search for Dorey.
Officers tell CBS 6's Catie Beck that they are not sure how long they are going to be there, but there is still an active scene.
The search comes on the same day Dorey's parents release a recorded plea for help (see story attached).
