HENRICO COUNTY -
A nasty tractor trailer accident on the highway on the ramp to I-64 in Eastern Henrico.
The truck overturned and dangled off the overpass Wednesday morning.
"The first units on the scene recognized that this was going to be a prolonged incident requiring specialized equipment and training."
Henrico firefighters has to make a daring rescue for the driver.
"It's dangerous, not only for the patient but for the responders. If that truck were to go over with our people in it. They're potentially at harm in there," said Henrico Fire Marshal Chief David Seay.
CBS 6 was the only station there when firefighters cut the driver out of the big rig and then carefully lowered him to the ground.
It took two ladder trucks, several fire engines, and Henrico's Tactical rescue team. Doing a job that requires intense training.
"These guys train all over the state of Virginia with other departments. They sharpen their skills constantly in preparation just for these types of incidents. We were very fortunate to have a well-equipped team."
Investigators say the driver , 60-year-old Aurang Zeb, was hauling 44-thousand pounds of metal bins.
But they're still trying to figure out what caused the crash.
Fire officials now looking back say this potentially dangerous situation turned out for the best.
Not only for them but the driver, who suffered serious injuries, and is now recovering in the hospital.
He's safe thanks to some highly skilled firefighters.
This is a good example of where training tools and experience pays off and brings us all to a successful outcome," said Chief Seay.
The accident blocked the exit ramp from southbound I-295 to Eastbound I-64 and access to Northbound 295 from Route 60 was also affected.
