A tractor trailer driver and a Virginia State Police officer are being hailed heroes for rescuing a man and this two children. This, after their Saturn veered off of Interstate 95, went down a 20 foot embankment and landed upside down in a creek.

It happened around 6:30 Sunday evening near the I-95/ Pocahontas Parkway interchange. According to state troopers, 37 year old Kevin E. Walker of Chestefield was behind the wheel of the 2001 Saturn. When he lost control and veered off of the road, a very alert and quick thinking tractor trailer driver called 911. Police say alcohol was a factor in the crash. They later arrested Walker for DUI and two felony counts of child endangerment.

Joseph Weavil, of North Carolina also stopped to try and help the victims in the car. Virginia State Police Sgt. Chris Clark quickly arrived and with Weavil's assistance was lowered down the steep embankment to the car. He was able to break out a window and rescue a five year old girl, her twin brother and the children's father who were all trapped inside.

Troopers say Weavil was a huge help. He's credited with guiding EMS crews to the crash site. The way the car landed, it wasn't visible from the interstate. Police say because of that, there's no telling how long it would have gone unnoticed.

Trooper Scott Bass tells CBS 6 "The quick actions of Mr. Weavil and his assistance in the rescue during the snowstorm undoubtedly made the difference between life and death for these individuals."

Walker and his two children were taken by ambulance to the VCU Medical Center with non-life threatnening injuries.
