CHESTERFIELD COUNTY -
Chesterfield County Police say they have arrested and charged a 16-year-old Meadowbrook High School student with brandishing a firearm on school property.
Police believe the incident was part of a prank.
They say the rifle was a theater prop displayed in a classroom. The teen is being held in a Chesterfield County Juvenile Detention Center, pending an upcoming hearing.
Shawn Smith, a spokesman for Chesterfield Schools released this statement to CBS 6:
"The school system strictly enforces our uniform written regulations for student conduct even if the incident is deemed to be a prank. Students who violate the regulations are subject to suspension and/or expulsion. We take very seriously our responsibility to provide a safe, supportive and nurturing environment. The students in the school were safe throughout what the police have called a prank."
