RICHMOND -
Richmond School Superintendent Dr. Yvonne Brandon delivered mixed news about the state of Richmond's public schools today.
Before city leaders, school leaders, and corporate sponsors she highlighted the achievements and challenges ahead.
Over 93-percent of Richmond schools are accredited, including all of the high schools. At one time, only two schools in the city were accredited.
Also, 79-percent of schools meet the state benchmarks in math and reading, exceeding the state average.
There are 35-thousand school aged children in Richmond, but only 24-thousand are enrolled in the public school system. That number is expected to drop to 20-thousand in five years.
Dr. Yvonne Brandon says, "Well, it's going to be a little bit difficult, but we're going reexamine what we do now and make sure our resources are focused upon these challenging goals that we have. I see them as opportunities for us to do things differently and to do things better."
The Richmond School District is also expecting a critical reduction in funding from the state, which may lead to layoffs.
