CHESTERFIELD COUNTY - RICHMOND -
Chesterfield County police have released two photos of the infant discovered this week in a shopping bag near a county bus stop.
They say the child was not just a day or two old when it was found, as originally thought. They believe the little girl could be as much as three weeks old and was delivered at a medical facility. Thursday afternoon, police released pictures of the baby, hoping someone will recognize her and lead them to the child's mother.
Chesterfield police say if the mom comes forward, she could face charges.
"Our investigation and charge will be depending upon as to why that child was left there. There's nothing to confirm that, that adult will be charged." said Ed Wessel with Chesterfield Police. When asked if the mother could live in the area, Wessel said: "That's speculation. We don't have a clue, that's why we're pleading for your assistance."
CBS 6 first told you about the abandoned baby, Monday, when she was found in a brown paper shopping bag left near a school bus stop. Neighbors who spoke to CBS 6 said the bag was first discovered at 7:00 a.m. but believed to be filled with recyclables. Later that afternoon, the same neighbor heard crying coming from the bag and saw the baby wrapped in towels and a white skirt.
Police say they're looking into medical records of infants born in the last 3 weeks, and checking DNA and blood tests. They're also talking with law enforcement in other jurisdictions outside of the Commonwealth. Right now, they can't say if the mom is a teenager or an adult.
The baby is now out of the hospital and in the custody of Child Protective Services.
