CENTRAL VIRGINIA -
For the first time in decades, the U-S Postal Service decided to close the doors to their retail side of business early here in Central Virginia.
The move comes as the latest snow storm pushes over the area.
Postal Authorities say last weekend's storm caused so many problems they decided from a safety stand point that the retail side, where you buy stamps and mail packages, should be closed early Friday afternoon.
The doors though remain open for those with post office boxes and special efforts were made to ensure the safety of rural mail carriers out of the Chesterfield Post Office.
Postmaster Michael Laffoon says he added 200 pounds of sand to the back of each mail truck, a shovel, and special snow cables have been attached to the rear tires of those mail trucks.
Postal Officials say after this storm, they will need homeowners and businesses to make sure a path is cleared to their mailbox so the postal worker can get to it safely.
Whether or not the retail side will remain closed Saturday or Monday has not been determined yet, but postal officials say safety has got to be their top priority.
