PETERSBURG -
Petersburg police are investigating whether a home owner opened fire on two people breaking into his home Wednesday morning.
One man was killed, another injured in the shooting on Ransom Street.
A woman who lives in the home, but who was not home at the time of the shooting says, "Someone tried to enter the property but they didn't get in and they were stopped."
Police say 20-year-old Shamondray Chavis was shot in the leg. He is now charged with attempted burglary.
Michael Trotter says his brother was the man killed in the morning shooting. Trotter says, "[He was a] good person, just I don't know man, he was always helping, always there for us and I don't know, I'm just shocked right now."
Neighbors say there has been at least two home break-ins on Ransom Street in the last several days.
"I hate to be this way but I'm satisfied and I'm hoping it sends a message that, the homeowner was tired, I was tired, everybody was tired and that's very, you know, we went on to purchase something to protect our property" says a woman who lives in the neighborhood.
