Update:
An attorney for John Allen Muhammad spoke to reporters at noon Wednesday, the day after his execution.
The attorney said the family is feeling remorse at this time. The family received a letter from John Allen Muhammad but said it would not be appropriate to read it publicly at this time, but will do so a later date.
Original Post: A prison official from the Greensville Correctional Center in Jarratt, Virginia confirms John Allen Muhammad died at 9:11 Tuesday evening.
Muhammad was executed for the murder of Dean Howard Meyers, 53, who was shot in the head at a Manassas gas station on Oct 9, 2002, in the midst of a killing spree that would claim ten lives.
Muhammad offered no final words and the official, Larry Traylor, said the process went smoothly. Traylor said Muhammad's demeanor remained calm throughout and once he was strapped to a gurney, he closed his eyes. As the drugs were administered, his eyes remained closed.
Traylor said a telephone line to the Governor's office was open during the entire procedure and that when the prison warden asked whether there was any reason to halt the execution, he was told there was no reason not to proceed.
CBS 6's Jon Burkett was a media witness to the procedure and said afterwards that six corrections officers were involved in strapping Muhammad to the gurney. He reported that before the intravenous drug lines were affixed, a blue curtain was drawn, momentarily concealing Muhammad, before the curtain was opened for Muhammad's last moments.
Jon reported Muhammad was dressed in blue denim jeans and shirt, and was clean shaven. He said he did not appear nervous and did not appear to make contact with the 27 state and media witnesses he would have been able to see, although he did look around. Muhammad would not have been able to see the observation room reserved for victims' families. He appeared to make no effort to speak.
Jon said Muhammad appeared to have stopped breathing at 9:08 pm and was pronounced dead at 9:11 pm.
