Fort Lee Soldier Prepares To Deploy With Dog
FORT LEE - Soldiers from Fort Lee are preparing to leave for duty overseas, but one of them has four legs.

Military Working Dogs have been around since World War II and at one point during that war there were 25,000 dogs pulling sentry duty, searching for the enemy and spotting for planes.

Now the roll of the military dog is to also find guns and ammo along with explosive devices.

Since the war on terrorism began, Fort Lee has deployed six dogs and their handlers.

Now they're about to deploy a seventh.

It takes a lot of training for the dog and the handler to sync but when they do they become a team that can save life's and that been proven in the past.

Along with duties overseas, military working dogs also have a roll here at home.

Many work the entry gates to military bases as well as searching cars for explosives and illegal drugs.

Currently the US Army Quartermaster Museum at Fort Lee has a showcase and old film footage on display highlighting the roll of the military working dog.
