It was one of his campaign promises, and now Governor Elect Bob McDonnell wants to fullfill it during the next 60 days.

McDonnell spokesperson Tucker Martin says he McDonnell wants to increase the speed limit to 70 miles per hour in rural areas of the state in order to help the flow of traffic. It would affect interstates 95, 64, 81 and 77.

But some people don't like the idea. "Look at the traffic fatalities that are occurring. That would be a death trap", says Angelo Nix.

Rachel Thom agrees "At 70mph, people will go 90 mph - and that's way over the speed limit...and I don't think that's a good idea".

But Communications Director Tucker Martin says they've done some research and there's more to come. " And we think it'll make traffic move quicker in some of the sparsely populated spots in Virginia..but we want to do it in a way that's safe for motorists and safe for law enforcement", says Martin.

Martin says he expects widespread support from the General Assembly.
