CHESTERFIELD -
A line hundreds deep formed for the latest round of H1N1 vaccine available in Chesterfield County.
Hundreds of people showed up as early as 7:30 Tuesday morning to get inoculated. The large turnout forced police to come out to the Chesterfield Health Department to direct traffic.
"I was shocked when I got here this morning, I said, oh my God, I should've been here earlier. But it's getting even longer, so, I think we'll be okay," said Mary Trotter, one of the people waiting in line.
Chesterfield Health officials tell CBS 6 they vaccinated 870 people in 5 hours, but turned dozens more away.
Chuck Hertel wasn't leaving until his grandson was inoculated. "His momma's got the flu, so, we took him when she started to get it and were going to keep him until she's over it."
Chesterfield is one of several health departments seeing a shortage of the vaccine. But Tuesday, children, pregnant women and others with underlying health conditions got inoculated.
Here's how. Residents got a numbered ticket, filled out a consent form, and were directed to one of 8 stations. They then received the nasal mist or a shot, depending on their health.
"If they have vaccine that fits what they need we will give it. If we've given out of one of the vaccines and they fit that category. We'll have to ask them to come back," said Chesterfield Health Department, nursing director, Paige Cecil. Chesterfield's Health Director Bill Nelson tells CBS 6, the process went a lot smoother this time around because they prepared early, gave out actual numbers to people, and turned them away before they waited in line.
Another vaccination clinic will be held at the county's health department on Thursday from 1pm to 6pm. You should come early and be patient because they're expecting even longer lines.
