KING AND QUEEN COUNTY, VA (WTVR) - A grand jury indicted a couple on 20 counts each of animal cruelty in King and Queen County Tuesday.
Robert H. Amos and Elizabeth B. Newsome-Amos were indicted after 33 horses were seized from their property at 5172 Powcan Road in Bruington on June 29, 2010.
Several agencies allegedly found the horses in varying stages of neglect and starvation, infested with lice, without food, water or veterinary care.
Officials say some were living in filthy enclosures with several inches of accumulated feces and urine.
As a result, the horses were handed over permanently to the United States Equine Rescue League on July 8, 2010.
Investigators say the couple's trial will likely begin on July 13 at the King and Queen Court House.
