RICHMOND - Commonwealth Catholic Charities says they are getting prepared in case orphans from Haiti are sent to Virginia.

The number of Haitian coming to the Commonwealth will depend on how many people are willing to become foster parents.

So far, about two dozen calls have come in to the organization with people wanting to know how they can help.

The situation in Haiti was bad before the earthquake hit.

Nearly 400,000 children were listed as orphans and now it's estimated tens of thousands more will be added to that list.

Before any child leaves Haiti though, Commonwealth Catholic Charities says the U-S State Department will have to declare them eligible for foster care, meaning no living relative can be found.

The U-S isn't the only country that is fast tracking the process, but it does take time.

The limit though will come when the number of foster parents is met.

CCC says because of the number of calls it has already received, a special information session about foster parenting has been set up for next week. To be included, you should call 804-545-5949 to be put on the list.

Foster parents have to meet certain requirements but that doesn't include having to speak the language.

CCC says most children overcome the language barrier within the first year.

Commonwealth Catholic Charities also provides a wide range of support for both the child and the foster parents, including a 24 hour on call phone line for parents to call for support and help.
