HENRICO -
Dozens of people went out to eat at a Henrico County restaurant on Thursday night, and they brought concealed handguns with them.
Members of the Virginia Citizens Defense League and others brought their firearms with them to the O'Charleys on Mayland Drive in the West End, to celebrate the new state law that allows people with concealed carry permits to bring their guns inside bars and restaurants, provided that they don't drink alcohol.
CBS 6 was the first to tell you about this story on Wednesday night. In all, hundreds of people affiliated with the VCDL brought their guns with them to multiple restaurants across the state Thursday.
While some restaurant owners and patrons believe the new law will lead to bloodshed inside bars and diners, others believe it will make those places safer.
Dennis O'Connor, who sits on the board of the VCDL, told CBS 6 that he believes the law will increase safety inside restaurants, because he says most concealed carry permit holders are law abiding citizens who have already passed rigorous state background checks.
O'Connor also says there will now be less guns left unattended in cars outside bars and restaurants, like they were under the previous law.
