RICHMOND—
Richmond Police, along with help from State Police and Richmond's Redevelopment and Housing Authority Police, took nearly 75 weapons off the streets of Richmond. These weapons were confiscated through the Department's annual Fugitive and Firearms Initiative.Lt. Marty Harrison with Richmond Police said officers confiscated weapons ranging in size from assault rifles to firearms. All of the weapons according to Lt. Harrison were from the city's Northside and Church Hill.
Lt. Harrison said RPD believes this initiative helped reduce crime by 13% this summer, not only because of the weapons they pocketed, but, drugs as well.
Police confiscated crack cocaine, heroin and more than a pound of marijuana. They also put a few fugitives behind bars wanted for multiple charges.
The successful program can't continue throughout the year because it consumes too many resources, according to Lt. Harrison. All weapons will be crushed and destroyed.
