CHESTERFIELD COUNTY -
It's been nearly a month since it happened.
"It's just something that's always on my mind and I guess everyone says it's going to be there for awhile," said Michael Dudley.
The 18-year-old thinks about the shooting all the time. When he wakes up in the morning, before he goes to bed and several times in between.
"To me it almost feels like a dream so I keep thinking about to try and figure out what happened," said Dudley.
About a month ago Michael Dudley, a Thomas Dale High School Graduate, was shot outside a pizza shop. He was trying to intervene in what looked like a violent dispute between a man and his wife. Police say then the woman Cindy Parker was shot and killed by her husband Richard Parker who also turned the gun on Dudley and shot him in the stomach. Bystanders hid in fear.
"The pain started to set in and I started to get really scared laying on the ground there cause I just started to think is anybody going to come help me," said Dudley.
The mental scars dudley says have healed. He's going out with friends and even eating in the same pizza place. He's got one scar that's taking a bit longer. It's about ten inches on his stomach where the bullet went in.
It's this one that will keep him from playing football this fall at Virginia State University.
"It's gonna take some time...I'm a little sad I can't play this year...but at least I can still play..could of been dead right?," said Dudley.
He will be starting school there in September and is hopeful to join his teammates in the spring. His full scholarship is still intact. Dudley says if he had known Parker had a gun, he still would have stepped in. He says he's still young and will likely make some dumb decisions, but this one taught him something.
"It made me feel good that people cared that much it really did. It really made my eyes open to how someone's life can matter so much to other people," said Dudley."
