CHESTERFIELD COUNTY -
Chesterfield fire investigators are working to determine the cause of a fire that killed a two-year-old boy and injured two others on Gunsight Terrace Monday night, but investigators do believe the fire was an accident.
The death of the two-year-old is hitting the Chester community pretty hard, especially the workers at Sibley's Barbecue. They tell us the parents of little Emerson who died in the fire worked at the restaurant.
The medical examiner hasn't released the identity of the two-year-old, but CBS 6 spoke with the child's father, Rober Cruz, who told us his son was the victim.
Katrina Doss, who manages the restaurant, says she was visiting the toddler and his mother Monday evening, about 20 minutes before she got the devastating phone call.
Doss says, "Everybody was just in disbelief. Especially me when I got the call. I was just over there, at their home. My first words were, 'How could this happen?'" She goes on to say, "I was thinking that if I had stayed a little longer, maybe this wouldn't have happened or maybe I could have helped in some kind of way. That's the hardest part for me."
Tuesday, workers at Sibley's Barbecue placed a memorial on their front counter and throughout the day, customers who learned about the tragic story donated money to be passed along to the family.
Ana Chavarria is listed in stable condition in a local hospital. A firefighter that was injured was treated and released from the hospital Monday night.
