John Allen Muhammad's First Wife Speaks Exclusively to CBS 6's Tracy Sears

JARRATT, VA - Just hours before the scheduled execution of John Allen Muhammad, the mastermind behind the DC Sniper killings, Muhammad's first wife spoke exclusively to CBS 6 about her ex-husband's last hours.

Carol Williams and her family arrived in Virginia Tuesday morning to travel to the Greensville Correctional Center near Jarratt to meet with Muhammad before he was executed Tuesday evening.

Williams and Muhammad were married for five years and have a 26-year-old son together, Lindberg Williams.

Williams says she talked to Muhammad several times after his conviction in the attacks that left 10 dead and three others injured.

She told CBS 6's Tracy Sears, "He talked, talked about the love for his kids and knowing that I'm going to bring him back to Louisiana, just to give him a private burial, basically for the kids because they need closure."

Williams says Muhammad apologized for the heartache he has caused his family, especially his children. While Muhammad did not offer an apology to the victim's families, Williams added, "My heart goes out to them. I can't imagine what they're going through."

She says Muhammad had come to terms with his death, "He'd been preparing himself for it. It was still hard but he was trying to get ready for it."

Williams says the family, who were in the death chamber Tuesday night, had also been preparing, but she said, "In the eleventh hour you could never really prepare yourself for something like this."
