COLONIAL HEIGHTS - Colonial Heights Police took a 49 year-old suspect into custody Thursday morning minutes after he was spotted running out the back door of his home. Police said tbey had considered Mark Nance armed and dangerous.

Colonial Heights Police Sergeant Tim Kifer said the original call was for a domestic disturbance.

"This was a person we had reason to believe that could be a harm to himself or to someone else and with the information we had, that he was armed, that made it even more concerning for us."

As police responded they spoke with a teacher in the parking lot of nearby North Elementary School. Because there was police activity around the school, the school was immediately put on lockdown.

With doors locked, students arriving for school were quickly ushered into one door by teachers and staff.

When police arrested Nance, they discovered his gun was missing. They were able to find the loaded weapon a short distance away, not far from the school.
