CHESTERFIELD COUNTY - Chesterfield police say it started as a domestic disturbance and ended in murder. They arrested 55 year old Peter Simpson and charged him with killing his 19 year old stepson Devon Mason.

It happened early Tuesday morning at Simpson's home on Flag Tail Drive, in the Triple Crown subdivision. Simpson is now charged with second degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and domestic assault of his wife.

The teenager was transported to VCU Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Investigators say this isn't the first time they've responded to Simpson's home for a domestic situation. They tell CBS 6 they went to the home last year, but no one was arrested. They declined to give details about that incident.

Local domestic violence experts hope this tragic story will prompt victims of domestic violence to take that courageous step and get help. McKenzie Casad is Director of Clinical Services at Richmond's YWCA. She oversees their domestic and sexual violence programs. She reminds the community while this domestic killing may have happened in a quiet Chesterfield neighborhood, it can happen anywhere, to anyone.

Casad encourages victims to call their 24 hour Crisis Hotline. The calls are confidential and the hotline counselors have extensive training in crisis management. That number is 804-643-0888.

Simpson is being held without bond in the Chesterfield County Jail. His pre-trial hearing is set for 11 o'clock a.m. Wednesday morning in Chesterfield's Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court.
