Chesterfield County Police have confirmed the body recovered from a small island in Swift Creek, near the Interstate 95 bridge Thursday is indeed that of 40-year old Kelly D. Catalano.

Police are awaiting final autopsy results, but there were no obvious signs of trauma. Catalano was reported missing from her work place on Innovation Drive on Jan. 15.

This is a breaking news update of the story below: ***

A boater out on Swift Creek Thursday in Colonial Heights discovered a human body washed ashore on a small island.

Jonathan Moore was in a canoe when he saw the body and contacted police around noon Thursday, and Chesterfield Police flew a plane to take aerial photographs of the scene.

Investigators from Colonial Heights Police & Fire confirmed it was in fact a body and called Chesterfield Police because that area is their jurisdiction. They confirmed the remains are that of a woman and said there were no missing persons cases in Colonial Heights.

Moore said when he first saw something out of the corner of his eye, he thought he was hallucinating, but when he got closer he realized it definitely was a human body.

He said it was a traumatic experience and he's having a hard time dealing with making the discovery.

The area is about a mile away from where a Chesterfield County woman was last seen back in January. Kelly Catalano disappeared while taking a break from her job on Innovation Drive.
