RICHMOND - Richmond police are asking witnesses to come forward in the case of Sunday's deadly shooting of William "Billy" O. Ennis III. The 29-year-old Ashland man was gunned down Sunday night as he drove up to a red light on Richmond's Belvidere Street near Marshall and Broad.

Investigators say they've interviewed several witnesses and now believe Ennis was not the intended target of the shooter. They also say the shooting was not random and "the gunman apparently selected a target, but Ennis unknowingly drove his vehicle into the line of fire and was struck".

According to Ennis' father, Billy and his friends were leaving a local restaurant when the shooting occurred. There were two female passengers in the car but only Ennis was injured. After the shooting, Ennis' car drifted down Belvidere coming to rest near the I-95 on ramp.

Two other friends were in another car in front of Ennis, and when they heard the shots they jumped out and saw three men run off. Police believe those three suspects were hanging out near Belvidere and Marshall street before the shooting.

Billy Ennis is Richmond's 22nd murder victim of the year.

Police say there were several people who saw what happened and they need them to come forward. They're giving the Crime Stoppers number at 780-1000 or the Tipline at 514-TIPS (8477).
