Protecting Pets from Domestic Abuse
A Virginia lawmaker wants to help protect pets caught up in domestic violence situations.

The SPCA says 70% of domestic violence victims say their abuser has hurt an animal in front of them.

Northern Virginia delegate Jim Scott has introduced a bill that would add pets to the protective orders filed by domestic abuse victims. Supporters say it's a tool the court system can use to keep all victims safe.

"We think all cruelty should be taken seriously. And if we take it seriously toward all of its victims, then we have a chance at stopping it. But if we tolerate it because it's a cat, because it's a woman, or because it's an elderly person, then we're tolerating it and we're all at risk." said Sharon Adams with the Virginia Beach SPCA.

Supporters add that not everyone who abuses animals abuses people too.
