RICHMOND—
The AARP is disappointed by Senator Mark Warners vote against a bill that would have legalized the importation of prescription drugs from abroad. The group contacted both Senators Warner and Jim Webb days before the vote, explaining its position and why passing this bill was vital for seniors.AARP state director, Bill Kallio said many of the groups' members are crossing the border into Canada and traveling to other countries for cheaper drugs. After last nights vote, he expects this trend to continue. Right now, there is no assurance about the safety and long-term effects of those drugs many are obtaining abroad. The bill would have legalized the importation and safety of prescription drugs from other countries.
Kallio says that would bring more competition to the healthcare system and drive down prices.
A spokesperson for Senator Warner said Warners vote came down to safety. Last nights vote would have allowed consumers to purchase imported drugs that did not meet FDA safety standards.
Senator Warner did vote for a previous version of the bill that would have allowed the importation of prescription drugs only if they were FDA approved.
