A front will bring scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms to the region this evening. Southwestern portions of the region are in a slight risk for severe storms. The main threat would be strong wind gusts. Overnight lows only fall to the low/mid 40s tonight.
TIMING OF THE SHOWERS/STORMS (VIEW INTERACTIVE SLIDESHOW)
Models are showing a line of showers and embedded storms approaching the region from the west by late-evening, approaching the NRV and Highlands around 9PM, moving east through Lynchburg and Danville around midnight. Rain amounts should be around .25" or less.
THURSDAY'S WARMTH
Southerly winds (10-15mph) arrive Thursday, causing a large temperature swing. We'll start with lows in the 40s, then climb to near 70 by the afternoon. Record highs are possible, especially in the Piedmont.
LATE WEEK SHOWERS
Our next cold front passes through the area Thursday night into Friday. This will be our best chance at seeing rain this week. Look for lows around 52 Thursday night, with highs Friday in the upper 50s. The best chance of rain will be Thursday night through around 10AM Friday morning.
THE WEEKEND
Cold air blows in behind the cold front Friday night. Lows drop to the low/mid 30s. Saturday is cooler and breezy with sunshine and highs in the upper 40s. A repeat on Sunday, with slightly warmer temperatures.
NEXT WEEK
February will end the way it started. Mild. Afternoon highs in the low/mid 50s. Monday brings sunshine, but a few showers head our way Tuesday.
