BLACKSTONE -
An explosion during a training exercise at Fort Pickett near Blackstone injured more than a dozen soldiers Wednesday night. It happened around 8:00 pm. The range commander at Fort Pickett says a female soldier was picking up a grenade simulator went it went off.
She was flown to VCU Medical Center, with second-degree burns and small lacerations on her hands. She is currently listed in stable condition and expected to make a full recovery.
A spokesperson from Southside Regional Medical Center said in an email at 10 pm that eleven soldiers had been admitted there with injuries and that all were in stable condition and were released over the corse of several hours. The range commander said most appeared to suffer from concussions.
As of Thursday afternoon, 13 of the 14 injured were back on duty.
Fort Pickett was an Army base until 1997 when it was turned over to the National Guard.
