SUPERVALU is one of the largest companies in the U.S. grocery channel. Through its nationwide supply chain network, SUPERVALU delivers food and general merchandise to more than 5,000 grocery stores across the country.
The company's Eastern region, which is headquartered in Mechanicsville, serves grocery stores of all sizes and formats from New York to North Carolina and as far west as Ohio. The region's distribution centers ship more than 315 million cases of product per year to grocery stores - traveling more than 3 million miles each month. Its warehouses currently hold in excess of 37.6 million cases of products from every major food manufacturer.
The diverse associate population in the Eastern region includes more than 4,400 people who work in jobs ranging from maintenance, warehousing, driving and logistics planning to merchandising, marketing and advertising. As part of its commitment to become the best place to work in the industry, SUPERVALU supports Business Resource Groups focused on the recruitment, retention and development of a diverse base of employees.
- The Women's Business Resource group focuses specifically on issues facing women entering and flourishing in the grocery industry.
- The Diversity Team is dedicated to building and sustaining a workforce that reflects the diversity of the retailers and consumers SUPERVALU serves.
- Within the region, the Focused On YOU team works to cultivate a positive and supportive work environment, fostering a culture of diversity and inclusion.
SUPERVALU also has an active internship and co-op program with Virginia Commonwealth University. Four students from study areas as diverse as finance and international business are active in our Mechanicsville facility.
The Eastern region is active in the community. The company believes that being a good corporate citizen is a key function of its organization in the areas it serves.
SUPERVALU supports the United Way through an annual giving campaign. The company contributed about $6 million last year; the local campaign generated nearly $160,000.
Through its SUPERVALU Community First Foundation, the Eastern region focuses on organizations addressing critical issues in our world today. The business and its associates also raise funds annually to support charities helping in a variety of areas:
- Hunger
- Domestic/family violence
- Blood services
- Eucation
- Housing and community revitalization
- Teen outreach and counseling
The Eastern region also supports Junior Achievement, with more than 30 associates from the Mechanicsville distribution center volunteering in area schools, and the region is a co-sponsor with Ukrop's Supermarkets of Richmond's well-known, annual Christmas Parade.
SUPERVALU believes being a good corporate citizen also means responding to natural disasters and focusing on environmental stewardship.
When nature strikes, SUPERVALU supports disaster preparedness and response, sending refrigerated trucks to retailers' stores when there is no electricity, so independent retailers and SUPERVALU banner stores can continue to serve their communities.
The Eastern region offers a plastic recycling program to its independent retail customers. Stores are provided a recycling bin for their customers to fill with plastic bags that pile up at home after shopping trips to area stores. Once the bin is full, the retailer simply removes the liner full of bags and returns them to SUPERVALU to be combined and recycled.
To help alleviate the impact on the environment, SUPERVALU drivers have reduced their maximum speed and idle time on routes. They are trained to conserve fuel, which involves details like checking tire pressure on each trip.
